Police arrested a man earlier this month on numerous charges including drug possession and evading arrest in Surprise, according to records.
Lamar Douglas, 22, faces one count each of criminal damage, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and making a false report to law enforcement.
The Surprise Police Department took Douglas into custody at about 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 14.
According to a probable cause statement, an officer responded to a local Walmart when the manager of the store reported seeing a suspicious individual.
The officer found Douglas sitting in an electric cart in the middle of the parking lot. The officer then asked him if he was in the possession of weapons or knives or had identification, to which Douglas said “no.” The officer noticed a large bulge in Douglas’ front left pocket and asked him to stand up. The officer conducted a search for weapons, upon which he smelled an odor of fresh marijuana.
The officer saw a clear sandwich-style bag containing marijuana in Douglas’ sweater pocket. The officer attempted to handcuff Douglas but he pulled away and pushed the officer. Douglas fled on foot but soon slammed onto the hood of a parked Toyota Corolla, which sustained a dent to the front driver-side fender, a cracked head lamp and a dent and scratches to the hood. Police estimated the damage at about $1,000.
The chase continued across Greenway Road where the officer apprehended Douglas. Before that, a motorist had to slam on his breaks to avoid striking Douglas.
Douglas provided the officer with a false name of “John Smith” and a false date of birth. However, police correctly identified him by his Arizona ID card located in his wallet.
The officer located three marijuana pipes in his pockets.
Under Miranda rights, Douglas admitted to possessing marijuana.
He was booked into a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office jail.
Douglas pleaded guilty to a previous criminal trespass charge in 2016, according to the Maricopa County Superior Court website.
