Cobras’ Flores wins player of week vote

In his first full varsity game for Cactus, sophomore tailback Anthony Flores broke the 200-yard barrier and scored four touchdowns.

Twelve days alter he scored a free tux, thanks to the voters of West Valley Preps. Flores won a tight race in the Week 1 football player of the week poll with 220 votes.

He gained 204 yards and those four scores on just eight carries in the Cobras’ 61-23 shellacking of Prescott Valley Bradshaw Mountain on Aug. 25.

Centennial senior slotback/strong safety Alex Escobar placed a close second that week with 192 votes for his performance in the Coyotes 41-0 romp at Apollo. He scored two rising touchdowns on four carries for 68 yards, added three catches for 102 yards and another touchdown, and tacked on a sack.

Not far behind was Sunrise Mountain junior quarterback Keegan Freid with 176 votes.¬†In the Mustangs’ 53-9 dissection of Buckeye, he completed six of eight passes for 204 yards and three touchdowns. Freid all gained 76 yards and another touchdown on seven carries.

For the second straight year, player of the week honorees, including Flores, will win more than bragging rights.
