Dunn wins girls athlete of the year vote

More than 2,300 votes came rolling in since May 20 for the West Valley Preps Girls Athlete of the Year Award.

Deer Valley senior volleyball outside hitter Kobie Dunn garnered 724 votes to claim the award. The Skyhawks’ four-year starter will play for Grand Canyon University next year.

Valley Vista junior guard Taylor Chavez placed second with 634 votes. She led the Monsoon to their first state team title in any sport.

Chavez enters her senior year considered one of the top 100 girls basketball recruits in the country. ASU, Baylor, California, Northwestern, Oregon, UCLA and Washington are on her short list for colleges

Liberty senior soccer forward Delaney Peery finished third with 387 votes. This fall Peery plays for Point Loma Nazarene University.

Voting for the West Valley Preps Boys Athlete has begun here and will continue through July 4. The following 10 athletes are the candidates:
